Finance Intern

Reports to: Finance Manager

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated Finance Intern to gain hands-on experience supporting the financial operations, reporting, and accounting activities that help our organization operate effectively and responsibly. This internship is designed for a student pursuing a degree in accounting, finance, economics, or a related business field who is interested in financial reporting, general accounting, accounts payable, budgeting, analysis, and foundation or nonprofit finance.

The internship will include a larger project, or a group of related projects, selected based on the Foundation’s business needs and the intern’s interests. At the end of the internship, the intern will prepare and present their work to selected staff and leadership.

What You’ll Learn

As a Finance Intern, you will support the Finance Department in numerous tasks and projects. This position will give you a chance to gain accounting experience in a wide-breadth of financial reporting. Responsibilities in this role will include daily general accounting functions, preparation of month end financial reports and accounts payable support. This internship will also entail a larger project that will span the course of the internship and will be based on the Foundation’s needs and candidate’s interests. 

Rotational assignments could be in any of the following business areas:

• Finance Shared Services
• Foundation Reporting
• Grant Accounting
• Subsidiary Accounting
• FP&A
• Investments

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the with accounting activities, including general ledger support, account reconciliations, journal entry preparation, and financial record maintenance.
• Help prepare month-end financial reports, schedules, and supporting materials for internal review and decision-making.
• Assist with financial analysis, budgeting support, data organization, and reporting projects that help identify trends, explain variances, and improve financial visibility.
• Maintain clear documentation for finance processes, procedures, reports, and project work while following internal controls and confidentiality expectations.
• Contribute to a finance-related internship project that supports process improvement, reporting efficiency, financial analysis, or other business needs of the Foundation.

Qualifications

• Actively pursing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a business-related field with special consideration for Accounting, Finance, or Economic degrees
• Ability to self-motivate in a fast-paced environment, ability to deal with ambiguity, change and a dynamic business environment.
• Basic understanding of financial systems and general accounting concepts.
• Ability to interact effectively with and develop strong relationships and partnerships with employees at all levels and in different functions.
• Reliable, organized and possess excellent analytical and interpersonal skills
• Ability to effectively work across multiple departments and business units to complete a project or resolve an organizational challenge.
• Experience in thinking critically and solving problems, including leveraging analytics, benchmarking, and insights to generate meaningful strategies and solutions
• Have a willingness to grow, research, and be a lifelong learner
• Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Internship Details

• Location: 10340 North 84th Street, Omaha, NE (on site)
• Schedule: Full-time internship
• Duration: Summer internship (10-12 weeks)
• Reports To: Finance Manager
• Compensation: Paid internship; (rates are based on experience, education level, internal guidelines and relevant market data for field of study)
